EWL operates as an integrated whole and the work of the all the groups and teams contribute to EWL’s overall mission and goals.
The Nutrition and Bone Health Programme is led by Dr Ann Prentice. The aim is to identify the role of nutrition and lifestyle in bone health and the prevention of osteoporosis and rickets within the wider context of nutrition policy for calcium and vitamin D in developed and developing countries. The goal is to promote public health by investigating the role of nutrition and other factors in the optimisation of bone health and the prevention of fragility fractures and rickets.
The BioMineral Research Group, headed up by Dr Jonathan Powell, aims to identify novel ‘form and function’ of biominerals in human health and disease. The group has a specific focus on nano-minerals and the gastrointestinal tract and, therefore, additionally contributes to the rapidly emerging need of a greater understanding of dietary exposure to nano materials. The group is also actively engaged in the translation of their research through to patient and/or population health benefit in line with MRC and EWL missions.
