Research Group / Team: Dietary Assessment Team, Nutrition Surveys and Studies, Unit Management Team
Polly is Group Leader for the Nutrition Surveys and Studies collaborative programme which was formalised in 2012 to sustain and take forward EWL’s unique collaborative vision for added-value in areas of strategic, policy and public health priority, most notably EWL’s contributions to national surveys. She acts as EWL PI for the National Diet and Nutrition Survey Rolling Programme and Urinary Sodium Surveys conducted in conjunction with NatCen Social Research on behalf of government health departments. Polly is also the Department Head for Operations, Logistics and Business Management, and as such leads on all aspects of infrastructure and research support in the Unit, directing operations, logistics and programme development for the national surveys programme (externally funded) in conjunction with senior scientific leads. She has responsibility for several EWL Specialist Teams - Dietary Assessment, Data Operations, Volunteer Studies and Clinical Services, Communications. Polly is a member of the Unit’s Strategic Leadership Board and, as the Unit’s Research Governance representative and Designated Individual on the Human Tissues Licence for EWL, she chairs the EWL Research Review Board which provides internal ethical review prior to external application and acts as a Steering Group for research governance.
Polly joined EWL originally as Unit Manager in April 2003 having previously worked in MRC Head Office, London, as a Research Business Manager for the Molecular Cellular Medicine and Neurosciences and Mental Health Research Boards. She has a BSc Hons degree in Psychology from Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, University of London. Before joining the EWL, Polly worked overseas as a management and development advisor to a national eye care facility in Nepal through Voluntary Service Overseas, prior to which she worked for 10 years in south London leading and managing volunteer-provided centre and community services for people living with HIV and AIDS, their families and carers.
